Zithers, Dulcimers and Harps
These instruments are tuned in set pitches
and unlike guitars don’t have fretboards. Each string produces just one note.
They have a light airy quality and sound like trickling water when rice or grains are poured over them.
They will require regular retuning before each session.
They can be played by plucking, bowing or strumming. Alternatively try tapping the strings with chopsticks. This gives another option for those who find it hard to pluck the strings.
The sound of a single stringed instrument can create a special moment within a workshop.
