The Theremin

An oddity here in that it is the only electronic instrument. The theremin is played by moving your hands (or any part of your body) in proximity to two aerials. One controls pitch, the other volume.

The sound is produced in a smooth continuous tone like a trombone or violin, not in steps like on a piano or guitar.

They are great for encouraging movement and particularly useful for activities such as rowing where their physical and sonic properties both reinforce the nature of the action.

The haunting, ethereal sound is particularly effective when played through electronic effects such as digital delay and it can greatly contribute to the atmosphere of a creative session.
